Abstract

Outstanding operation performance is indispensable for the profit and development of an enterprise. Since such business performance is based on the efforts and achievements of each and every employee, continuous improvement of individual performance is, therefore, crucial for higher performance of the team and the whole company. Naturally, human resource, the most dynamic, potential and valuable department of a modern enterprise, has been attached with greater importance by business managers. More and more enterprises start looking for a better management solution in accordance with people-oriented management philosophy, which leads to employees’ proactive participation and contributions by valuing, relying on the employees, exploring their potential, enhancing their competency and improving their satisfaction of the working environment, etc. Employees’ high performance is not only a measuring stick for an enterprise’s management performance, but also a critical way to improve an enterprise’s core competitiveness, and a significant guarantee of realizing scientific and sustainable development.

In the past century, scholars have conducted abundant researches in increasing employees’ “morale” and “emotion”, hoping to improve individual performance and organizational performance through the enhancement of individual satisfaction. As such researches were carried out and developed; scholars found that there are other factors that directly or indirectly affect the relation and interaction between job satisfaction and job performance. Research on job involvement, emerged in the 1990s, called people’s attention to the influence of employee’s subjective initiative on relevant factors, and further researches in this field have been conducted.

Railway system, the “transport artery”, plays a pivotal role in Chinese economy. However, modern human resource management system has not functioned effectively in Chinese railroad industry. It was attributed to the integrated government functions and enterprise management, as well as its lagging management. Moreover, Chinese railroad system’s partly militarized management has also exacerbated the situation with strict working discipline, simple and dull job content, long working hours, few vocation, tough working environment, etc. With railroad employees as the subjects, job satisfaction, job involvement, and job performance as research orientation, this empirical research provides reference to enhance the human resource management of railroad system for the managers of relevant enterprises.
